Boost your skills: new safety campaign for recreational boating


The recreational boating community is being encouraged to ‘Reduce the risk, boost your skills’ in an important new joint safety campaign, together with our Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) partners.   

The campaign includes free checklists that boat owners can use to refresh their skills and help them prepare their vessels for the new boating season. They are free to download from the campaign page on the RNLI website.

The lists include reminders to check the weather forecast and tide times, onboard safety equipment and making sure the crew are wearing appropriate clothing for the conditions. A crew briefing card is included which encourages people to discuss the passage plan and expected weather, check for any medical conditions amongst the crew and check lifejackets are fitted correctly. 

  

There’s also a checklist for when a vessel is underway, as well as an emergency action plan should things go wrong including the emergency VHF radio calling procedure. 

  

 Derrick Jones, Assistant Chief Coastguard for HM Coastguard, said:   

"Through this important campaign, we’re pleased to work alongside partners from the RNLI and RYA to raise awareness of the risks involved in recreational boating.   

"We hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time on the water, but it’s essential that all levels of boater, from beginner to experienced, are properly equipped to handle emergency situations that can occur on the water at any time of year, and in any conditions.   

"From the effective use of Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) to lifejackets, essential checklists and crew drills such as man overboard procedures, we want to highlight that safety should be the first consideration before taking to the water this season."

   

Sarah Pennicard, of the RNLI Water Safety Team, said:  

"We always want people to enjoy our coastline, but things can quickly go wrong at sea, which is why it’s so important to be prepared. 

"By keeping our essential checklists onboard, you’ll be reducing the risks of incidents occurring or increasing in severity."

Richard Falk, RYA Director of Training, said:

"We’re delighted to join forces with the RNLI, HM Coastguard and Irish Sailing through this campaign. No matter how long you’ve been boating, an element of planning is required for even the simplest and shortest of journeys. The start of the season is also a great time to refresh your knowledge and expand your skills with an RYA training course whether on shore or on the water."

  • Note: The RNLI is working with the MCA, HM Coastguard and the RYA to deliver the campaign in the UK. Irish Sailing are supporting the campaign in the Republic of Ireland.

PRESTWICK SEARCH AND RESCUE HELICOPTER SERVICE LAUNCH MARKED IN CEREMONY

- Prestwick search and rescue helicopter base set to go live in January - The launch of the Prestwick civilian UK search and rescue (SAR) helicopter service was marked today (Thursday 17 December 2015) in a ceremony held at the new Coastguard SAR base at Prestwick Airport. Bristow Helicopters Ltd is operating the search and rescue helicopter service for the UK on behalf of HM Coastguard. The UK limited company was awarded the ten-year UK SAR contract by the Department for Transport in March 2013, representing a £1.9bn investment by the UK Government in the UK’s search and rescue helicopter service. By 2017 the service will be delivered from ten bases in all, strategically located close to areas of high SAR incident rates. BOSCASTLE FLOODS: TEN YEARS ON

Boscastle Flooding 16 th August 2004 The storms of Monday 16 August 2004 saw three weeks worth of rain fall in one day. The resulting water began to be funnelled down the valleys surrounding Boscastle and soon the steep roads became rivers. By the time that the water reached the picturesque village, it had picked up enough momentum to become a raging torrent, sweeping into buildings, washing cars away and felling huge trees.
