UPDATED: Extensive search after report of man overboard

HM Coastguard coordinated an extensive search today (February 15) after receiving a report of a potential man overboard.
A coastguard helicopter from Lydd, a coastguard rescue team from Margate, RNLI lifeboats from Ramsgate and Margate, a Kent police RHIB and a Royal Navy vessel were all involved in the search, which was carried out in very rough seas and challenging conditions.

A call, reporting a possible man overboard, came in from a boat off Margate Harbour at around 5.41am.

At around 1pm, after many hours of searching, a body was sadly found in the water by the RNLI Margate lifeboat and was brought to shore.

Today HM Coastguard is a world leader in maritime search and rescue. Looking back almost 200 years, the goods, which now travel by road, were carried by hundreds of small ships. Year in year out dozens of ships and hundreds of lives were lost within sight of the coast. Public shock and dismay at the tragedies drove forward the creation of national life saving organisations. Boscastle Flooding 16 th August 2004 The storms of Monday 16 August 2004 saw three weeks worth of rain fall in one day. The resulting water began to be funnelled down the valleys surrounding Boscastle and soon the steep roads became rivers.
