Man and his dog rescued after getting stuck on dangerous cliff in Porlock, Devon

Marking their second anniversary today since they went live with HM Coastguard, the St Athan Coastguard helicopter has just released footage of a man and his dog rescued after getting stuck on a dangerous sliding cliff near Porlock, Devon.

The call came into the Coastguard just before 5pm on Monday 2 October, from Avon and Somerset Constabulary requesting Coastguard assistance to find a missing man in the area of Porlock Point.

The worried man had called 999 when he became disorientated and perilously close to a cliff edge just off the coastal path near Porlock.

Minehead, Lynmouth and Watchet Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Minehead RNLI Lifeboat were all sent to the location to join the search.

The man, who was waving his torch, was quickly spotted 100ft on top of a cliff by the Minehead RNLI. He was tired and in an extremely dangerous position on a sliding cliff face amidst dense undergrowth which made it very difficult for teams on the ground to reach the man safely.  It was quickly established that the safest rescue option was to airlift him out by helicopter - so the UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at St Athan were sent in to help.

The man and his dog (who you can see in the special doggie carrier bag) were airlifted to safety.  Despite their ordeal, the man and his required no medical treatment. We wish them a speedy recovery.
