Coastguard Supports Flood Response Overnight

The UK Coastguard has responded to multiple requests for support during the overnight flooding in Cumbria. 

The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Caernarfon was involved for eight hours in the Lake District on a number of different incidents and rescued a family of six from their flooded home and recovered three people who had been trapped in their vehicle by a land slide. 



In flooded areas of Carlisle, Coastguard Rescue teams worked through out the night and early hours in challenging conditions with winds up to 65 miles per hour.  The Royal Navy helicopter from Prestwick attended and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter based at Humberside and worked with Coastguards and other emergency services to recover people from flooded homes and vehicles and the water.  

Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team helped evacuate 120 marooned residents from the river bank of a residential park to safer ground at Penrith after their caravans became flooded.  


Coastguard Rescue Teams from Knott End and Fleetwood went to help other emergency services with the flooding response in Lancaster and in Cockermouth, Maryport and Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Maryport independent rescue boat attended to support the flood response in the town.

Coastguard vehicles and rescue helicopters have also been valuable support in transferring people to hospital where access has been cut by flooding.
