MCA CELEBRATES SUCCESS IN BIRTHDAY HONOURS LIST

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is celebrating after three of its team received awards in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Richard Martin, H.M. Coastguard’s Head of Coastal Resources has been recognised for his services to Her Majesty’s Coastguard with an OBE. Richard has worked for the MCA for many years and during this time he has significantly advanced the standards of equipment and safe working practices of the service. He has worked tirelessly to improve the techniques Coastguards use to rescue people on land, in mud and in the water and as a result significant advances have been made in this arena.

Richard, who lives in New Milton, Hampshire, said:

"I am delighted to have been recognised by Her Majesty in this way. This award is both a great personal honour and a tribute to the dedication and professionalism of Coastguards and colleagues I work with throughout the UK."

MCA Maritime Surveyor, Captain Rod Shaw received an MBE for his services to maritime safety. He has worked for the MCA for 13 years after a long and distinguished career in the Merchant Navy and as a Harbour Master. His recognition is not only for the work he has done to improve working operations on the Thames but for his contribution to Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

Rod, who lives in Harwich, Essex said:

"I’m really proud to have been recognised in this way by Her Majesty, particularly as it carries on a family tradition as my mother was also the recipient of an MBE.
"I’d like to accept this award on behalf of all my colleagues in the MCA who work tirelessly to improve maritime safety and who shared the responsibility for inspecting over 500 vessels that were participating in the Diamond Jubilee Pageant.”

Graham Locke has been a Coastguard Rescue Officer for 36 years with the Port Talbot Coastguard Rescue Team. He receives the MBE for Services to Her Majesty’s Coastguard.
The recipients of two Chief Coastguard’s Commendations, Deputy Station Officer Graham has shown dedication and commitment throughout his time as a Coastguard Rescue Officer and has saved many lives.

Graham, who lives in Neath said:


"I’m honoured to accept this award on behalf of my family who have proudly served the Coastguard for over 156 years and my community and the people that work alongside me to help and rescue those in need."
