SAFETY REMINDER AFTER GIRL RESCUED FROM WATER OFF CARNOUSTIE

HM Coastguard is once again urging people to take extra care when out on our coastline, after a 13-year-old girl was rescued from the sea off Carnoustie beach last night.

Aberdeen Coastguard received a 999 call just after 8pm from a member of the public who spotted someone in the water just off Beach Park. Arbroath and Carnoustie Coastguard Rescue Team, the RNLI’s all-weather and inshore lifeboat from Arbroath, Officers from Police Scotland and the RAF search and rescue helicopter from Lossiemouth were sent to the scene.

Two of the Coastguard Rescue Officers entered the water with specialist water rescue equipment, one up to his shoulders, but managed to keep the girl in sight and direct the lifeboat to the casualty when it arrived on scene. She was taken by lifeboat to an ambulance waiting nearby. Staff at a nearby leisure centre also assisted, and the casualty was taken to hospital.

The water temperature at the time was approximately 4C.

Ross Greenhill, Montrose Sector Manager, said:

“Other youngsters had tried to help the girl but also got into difficulty. They managed to make it back to shore with the help of local leisure centre staff. We always advise people not to attempt a rescue themselves, but call 999 ask for the Coastguard and wait for rescue services to arrive on scene. Coastguard Rescue Officers and lifeboat crews are equipped and specially trained for these situations.

“I’d like to thank all those involved in this rescue and wish the young person a speedy recovery.”
