Four walkers rescued from Isle of Skye peak (with footage)

The UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Stornoway airlifted four walkers to safety in the Isle of Skye last night (21 April).

The walkers were descending the mountain when they got into difficulties due to fading daylight and decided to call for help at around 8.40pm.  The group lost communications with the emergency services and a co-ordinated effort from the UK Coastguard helicopter, Kyle and Broadford Coastguard Rescue Teams, Skye Mountain Rescue Team and Police Scotland was quickly put into action to locate them. 

The Coastguard helicopter was the first to reach the group and found them stuck on a dangerous ledge, 2,000ft high on Bla Bheinn, Isle of Skye.  Winch operator Robert Glendinning and winchman Peter Wood had to use all their skills to rescue the four - the winchman even climbing the cliff at one point – to reach them.

The walkers were airlifted to Broadford Airfield, Isle of Skye.  They were uninjured and required no medical treatment.

PRESTWICK SEARCH AND RESCUE HELICOPTER SERVICE LAUNCH MARKED IN CEREMONY

- Prestwick search and rescue helicopter base set to go live in January - The launch of the Prestwick civilian UK search and rescue (SAR) helicopter service was marked today (Thursday 17 December 2015) in a ceremony held at the new Coastguard SAR base at Prestwick Airport. Bristow Helicopters Ltd is operating the search and rescue helicopter service for the UK on behalf of HM Coastguard. The UK limited company was awarded the ten-year UK SAR contract by the Department for Transport in March 2013, representing a £1.9bn investment by the UK Government in the UK’s search and rescue helicopter service. By 2017 the service will be delivered from ten bases in all, strategically located close to areas of high SAR incident rates. Boscastle Flooding 16 th August 2004 The storms of Monday 16 August 2004 saw three weeks worth of rain fall in one day. The resulting water began to be funnelled down the valleys surrounding Boscastle and soon the steep roads became rivers.
