WOMAN RESCUED FROM SEA AT NEWQUAY

A lady was rescued at Newquay this evening after being swept out from the beach in rough conditions and a heavy swell.

At 6.10pm Falmouth Coastguard received a 999 call reporting that a woman had followed her dog down the steps to Little Fistral beach and was swept out by a wave, to beyond the surf line.  Two members of the public had taken a life ring and gone into the water and found her face down and supported her.

Falmouth Coastguard requested the launch of the Newquay RNLI inshore lifeboats and also the rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose.   Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team also attended and used a megaphone to ask the rescuers in the water to go back out beyond the surf line as it was is considered too dangerous to come back onto the beach and the lifeboat was on its way.  The lifeboat picked up all three and the rescue helicopter then winched the hypothermic casualty and transferred her to Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

The two men, both from the Newquay area were checked by a paramedic at the lifeboat station but did not need medical attention.  The lady is also from Newquay and her dog returned to shore unaided.
