TIDE TRAPS THREE IN THEIR CAR ON ESSEX CAUSEWAY

A woman, a child and a baby, have been rescued from their car which became stuck in flood water on The Strood causeway near Colchester. It comes just 24 hours after ten people had to be rescued from their vehicles also trapped by the high tide at Mersea Island.    
 
Thames Coastguard was called about the latest incident just before 2pm. The West Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team and the West Mersea RNLI inshore lifeboat were sent to the scene, along with the search and rescue helicopter from RAF Wattisham.
 
With the car described as almost floating, the three were picked up by the lifeboat and taken to safety.
 
Aimee Rampton, Watch Manager Thames Coastguard said: "Even during this rescue, another vehicle attempted to cross the causeway. I would like to again stress how important it is not to attempt crossing The Strood during highwater spring tides, as it is highly likely that the road will be covered with sea water and with it strong undercurrents.”
 
"We’ve dealt with two similar incidents in the last 24 hours. It is very lucky that no one has been hurt.”

Today HM Coastguard is a world leader in maritime search and rescue. Looking back almost 200 years, the goods, which now travel by road, were carried by hundreds of small ships. Year in year out dozens of ships and hundreds of lives were lost within sight of the coast. Public shock and dismay at the tragedies drove forward the creation of national life saving organisations. BOSCASTLE FLOODS: TEN YEARS ON

Boscastle Flooding 16 th August 2004 The storms of Monday 16 August 2004 saw three weeks worth of rain fall in one day. The resulting water began to be funnelled down the valleys surrounding Boscastle and soon the steep roads became rivers. By the time that the water reached the picturesque village, it had picked up enough momentum to become a raging torrent, sweeping into buildings, washing cars away and felling huge trees.
