Search for crew member overboard off the West Sussex coast

The UK Coastguard is coordinating the search for a missing crew member who went overboard from a merchant vessel earlier this evening.

The vessel made a Mayday broadcast at approximately 6.30pm today (Friday 15 July) reporting that they had a crew member overboard 30 miles south-east of Selsey Bill, West Sussex.

The UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Lee on Solent, as well as the Newhaven and Shoreham RNLI all weather lifeboats have been sent to the area.

A number of merchant vessels have responded to the Mayday relay broadcast that has been issued by the UK Coastguard and are also making their way to the area to join the search.

The search is ongoing.
