Yacht crew injury in the Shetland Islands

A lady with an arm injury on a french sailing yacht has been evacuated by Coastguard helicopter off Fair Isle with assistance from the ferry MV Hrossey.

Shetland Coastguard was contacted by MV Hrossey on Friday evening reporting they had heard a PAN PAN broadcast for help by a man and wife team on a french yacht. Shetland Coastguard had heard and responded to a PAN from the yacht but due to distance off, the transmission was poor.  The MV Hrossey enroute from Lerwick to Kirkwall initially provided a communications relay.

Kirkwall RNLI lifeboat was launched and the Coastguard helicopter from Shetland. HV Hrossey diverted to the scene and launched a fast response craft to help the casualty while the ferry stood by and a ferry passenger on board provided a translation service between HM Coastguard and the yacht.

The casualty was then transferred by Coastguard helicopter to hospital in Lerwick.
