Emergency Services called to cliffs at Swanage

Emergency services responded to a call today following reports a woman had gone over the cliffs at Swanage.

At around 2.30pm today, Saturday 6 February 2016, Dorset Police were called to Peveril Point by a member of public who saw a woman fall from the cliff.

Dorset Police, Swanage, Poole and St Alban’s Coastguard Rescue Teams, the UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Portland and the Southwest Ambulance Service attended.

A local woman aged in her 50s was airlifted from the cliffs by the coastguard helicopter and taken to a safe place where she was treated by paramedics. She sustained very serious head and chest injuries and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the air ambulance. Her condition is said to be life-threatening.

The woman’s family have been informed.

Steve Mann, UK Coastguard said:  ‘HM Coastguard coordinated a very difficult rescue this afternoon at Peveril Point.  We would remind people that if they see anybody in difficulty on or around the cliffs in the UK to please call ‘999’ and ask for the Coastguard.’

Chief Inspector Bob Acaster, of Dorset Police, said: “Emergency services worked hard in very difficult weather to rescue the woman from the cliff and bring her to safety.”
