Two rescued from sea following microlight crash

Two people were rescued from the sea this afternoon after their microlight crashed into the Cromarty Firth.

The microlight with two people on board was spotted in difficulty near Evanton by another aircraft at just after 2.00 pm.

The UK Coastguard were informed and requested the launch of the Invergordon RNLI Lifeboat. The Coastguard rescue helicopter from Inverness was scrambled and the Inverness, Cromarty and Portmahomack Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent to the scene.

The lifeboat launched its inflatable rescue craft and recovered the two people from their craft. They were then airlifted from there and taken by Coastguard helicopter to hospital.

Calum Christie, UK Coastguard commented

“Although shocked and hypothermic, the crew were uninjured. It was fortunate that they were spotted by the other aircraft who quickly reported their predicament. We were able to get rescue resources on scene swiftly resulting in a positive outcome.”
