PEOPLE WARNED OF DANGERS OF SAND CLIFFS

The Coastguard is warning people not to risk their lives by going near sand cliffs.

The recent storms and high tides have turned some sand dunes into sand cliffs - leaving a steep drop to the shoreline below.

People are being warned not to sit under sand cliffs, climb on them, or dig into them, as they are prone to collapse.

Parts of Cornwall - such as Perranporth, Gwithian and Marazion - and North Devon are among areas that have been affected.

James Instance, Manager at Falmouth Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said: "Sand cliffs can be very unstable - they weigh thousands of tonnes and could collapse at any time, posing a real threat to people who ignore warnings and go near them.

"Our advice is simple: enjoy yourself on local beaches but keep away from sand cliffs."
