TWO DOGS OVER CLIFFS ON SOUTH COAST

HM Coastguard is again warning owners to keep dogs on leads to keep them safe when walking near cliffs after two dogs have fallen in separate incidents today.

This morning, Exmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the Exmouth RNLI inshore lifeboat were called out after a golden retriever fell 40 feet at Exmouth.  The dog’s owners were visiting the area on holiday and fortunately this dog did survive the accident.

Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team was called out to a beach close to Durdle Door, after a springer spaniel went over the cliff and fell 150 feet.  Sadly, when the animal was located down on the beach it was dead.

Cindy Rodaway, Portland Coastguard Watch Manager says.

“When walking near cliffs you should keep your dog on a lead to keep them safe. Even well behaved and obedient dogs can still behave unpredictably and run over cliffs when they hear or smell something interesting.  If your dog goes over please don’t attempt a rescue, in an emergency contact 999 for the Coastguard.”
