KITE SURFER RESCUED IN NORTH DEVON

A kite surfer was rescued from the sea after getting into difficulty off Saunton Down today and airlifted to hospital.

Swansea Coastguard responded to a report that a kite surfer was washed up on the rocks off Saunton Down in North Devon this afternoon.  The 63 year old kite surfer was airlifted by the rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor and transferred to North Devon District Hospital with cuts and bruises.  Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team also in attended to secure a helicopter landing zone on the beach.

Conditions on scene were Southerly force 7 to gale force 8, with rough seas and 8 foot surf.


Swansea Coastguard Watch Manager David Jones says,

“Coastguard warns water sports enthusiasts to always check conditions and tides before setting off.  Don’t go alone and always wear a personal flotation device, (PFD).  Wear bright clothing which will help you be located if you get into difficulty.”
