COASTGUARDS PRAISE QUICK-THINKING EIGHT-YEAR-OLD

Swansea Coastguard have praised a quick-thinking eight-year-old girl who scrambled across rocks and negotiated a busy road to get help for her injured mother.
The 45-year-old woman and four children had been out for a walk in Lime Slade Bay when she had slipped and fractured her right ankle. The girl left three other children with the woman and ran to a nearby ice cream parlour to call for help. The air ambulance was called and Swansea Coastguard were asked to assist by requesting the help of the Mumbles Coastguard Rescue Team.
The coastguards cleared a landing area for the helicopter and administered first aid to the woman whilst awaiting the arrival of the air ambulance. A land ambulance was also called. Once the paramedics were on scene, the coastguards and paramedics were able to carry the woman to the land ambulance for onward transmission to hospital.
David Jones, Swansea Coastguard Watch Manager says:
“The little girl acted very bravely to help her mother and we’d like to praise her quick-thinking actions. In this circumstance she could also have called 999, although it may have been difficult to get a signal down in the rocky bay. Our coastguards and the paramedics worked as a team to get the woman from an awkward position to the ambulance.”

Today HM Coastguard is a world leader in maritime search and rescue. Looking back almost 200 years, the goods, which now travel by road, were carried by hundreds of small ships. Year in year out dozens of ships and hundreds of lives were lost within sight of the coast. Public shock and dismay at the tragedies drove forward the creation of national life saving organisations. BOSCASTLE FLOODS: TEN YEARS ON

Boscastle Flooding 16 th August 2004 The storms of Monday 16 August 2004 saw three weeks worth of rain fall in one day. The resulting water began to be funnelled down the valleys surrounding Boscastle and soon the steep roads became rivers. By the time that the water reached the picturesque village, it had picked up enough momentum to become a raging torrent, sweeping into buildings, washing cars away and felling huge trees.
