WORRIED TEENAGER CUT OFF BY TIDE DIALS 999

Two teenagers called Swansea Coastguard this evening after their walk home from Pembrey Country Park left them cut off by the tide near Pembrey Old Harbour.

The two teenagers – a 16-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy - had been attempting to walk to Burry Port from Pembrey Country Park when they became stranded and in urgent need of rescue.  At 10.00 pm the girl dialled 999 and spoke to Swansea Coastguard, who kept her on the line whilst they sent resources as she was extremely upset and concerned for her and her friend’s safety.

Swansea Coastguard sent the Burry Port RNLI Inshore Lifeboat to the scene, who quickly located the two teenagers and took them both back to Burry Port where they were met by the Burry Port Coastguard Rescue Team and reunited with their parents.

Swansea Coastguard Watch Manager Bev Haigh said:

“These two teenagers were in real danger when they quite rightly dialled 999 – although onlookers were advising them that they could make it ashore they were actually surrounded not only by deep water from the rising tide, but also by deep mud.

Walking along the beach might seem like a shortcut home to some, but if you are intending on doing so you should always be aware of the hazards in the area, and check the tide times before you set out.”
