TWO TEENAGERS RESCUED FROM CLIFFS NEAR WHITBY

Two young men were rescued from the cliffs at Calymore Beck in Runswick Bay near Whitby this afternoon after a crew member of the Runswick Rescue Private Inshore Rescue Boat called Humber Coastguard to report that they were in difficulty.

The call, at 1738, reported that they were stuck on the cliffs in a precarious position and in need of rescue.  Humber Coastguard sent the Runswick Rescue Craft, Staithes and Skinningrove Coastguard Rescue Teams and RAF Rescue Helicopter 128 to the scene.

The Runswick Rescue craft was first to arrive on scene and quickly located the casualties. The Coastguard Teams then arrived on scene and secured the casualties prior to the arrival of the Rescue Helicopter.  At 1845 the helicopter winched the two males from the cliff and placed them on the beach where the Runswick Rescue Boat collected them and transferred them back to the boat house at Runswick Bay, where they were treated for shock.

Drew Mahood, Humber Coastguard Watch Manager said:

“The two young men – one 18 years old and the other 19 – were rescued from an embankment on the cliff above a 50ft vertical drop down to the beach.  We always advise members of the public to stick to designated footpaths when walking along the coast, and never attempt to climb or scale down clifftops as you can easily find yourself in a dangerous situation and in need of rescuing.”
