MAN TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER GOING AFTER FISHING ROD

Humber Coastguard sent a Coastguard Rescue Team and a lifeboat to the rescue of a man who got into difficulty in the water off Amble south jetty after going in for his fishing rod.

At half past ten this evening North East Ambulance Service contacted Humber Coastguard after receiving reports of a man in the water near the south jetty in Amble.  He had been shore angling and lost his fishing rod, and after going to retrieve it, had been in the water for 20 minutes.

Eventually, two of the man’s friends managed to pull him from the water, and he was brought ashore and checked over by the ambulance.  The man was suffering from severe hypothermia, and he was taken to Wansbeck Hospital in Ashington for treatment, and also to ensure that he does not suffer from secondary drowning.

Humber Coastguard Watch Manager Graham Dawson said:

“This incident could have quite easily had a very different ending had this man’s two friends not been able to pull him from the water.  When he was rescued he had already been in the water for 20 minutes and was suffering from severe hypothermia.  This incident proves that no equipment; no matter how expensive, is worth going into the water for, and we advise members of the public not to risk their lives trying to do so.  Finally, if you do see someone in trouble at the coast, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
