MAN AND GRANDSON RESCUED FROM CLIFF

At 13.31 pm today, Liverpool Coastguard received a 999 call from a gentleman at St Bees Head reporting that he could see a man and a boy climbing the cliff as they were cut off by the tide.

Liverpool Coastguard called out the Whitehaven Coastguard rescue team to the scene and requested the launch of the St Bees RNLI inshore lifeboat. Police and Ambulance services were also informed

The lifeboat upon arriving was able to pinpoint the exact location of the two individuals to the Whitehaven Coastguard rescue team. The coastguard rescue team lowered a rescue officer down to the two utilising their cliff rescue equipment and were able to successfully recover them to the top of the 50 foot cliffs. They were checked over by the ambulance staff and were then given some advice by the Coastguard officers about the tides and the dangers of the cliffs in the area.

Liverpool Coastguard, Watch Manager, Paul Parkes said:

There has been some collapsing of the cliff faces in this area after the winter weather, making the area inaccessible in places and increasing the risk of being cut off by the tide.

Plan your walk at the coast and ensure that you are aware of tide times.
