BELFAST COASTGUARD ASSIST MOURNE MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM WITH RESCUES

Belfast Coastguard has responded to two requests for assistance this afternoon by Mourne Mountain Rescue Team.

The first request came at with respect to an injured walker from Glen River Valley in the Mourne Mountains. The South Down Coastguard Rescue team and the Irish Coastguard Rescue helicopter R116 was initially requested to attend by Belfast Coastguard.  The Rescue helicopter was stood down and the injured walker was taken by stretcher down the mountain, due to the weather conditions on scene being unfavourable for the Rescue helicopter.

The second request was at again requesting assistance to a lady who had fallen in a gully at the top of Slieve Begg near the Kilkeel River.  Belfast Coastguard sent the Irish Coastguard Rescue helicopter R116 and the South Down Coastguard Rescue team to the scene. The crew on the helicopter located the injured woman, who had lower leg injuries and evacuated her to Daisy Hill Hospital, Newry.

Alan Pritchard, Watch Manager Belfast Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said:

“Today we have had two incidents where we have worked closely with the Mourne Mountain Rescue team and our colleagues in the Irish Coastguard. We would like to remind the public to take care when going out for a coastal or river walks, as this is always a popular pastime, but it is important to be sensible and keep to the path and stay away from areas of risk such as cliff edges. Always, dress sensibly for the terrain and weather – wear suitable clothing and footwear and be ready for possible changes in the weather and always let someone know your whereabouts. In an emergency dial ‘999’ and ask for the Coastguard.”

Today HM Coastguard is a world leader in maritime search and rescue. Looking back almost 200 years, the goods, which now travel by road, were carried by hundreds of small ships. BOSCASTLE FLOODS: TEN YEARS ON

Boscastle Flooding 16 th August 2004 The storms of Monday 16 August 2004 saw three weeks worth of rain fall in one day. The resulting water began to be funnelled down the valleys surrounding Boscastle and soon the steep roads became rivers. By the time that the water reached the picturesque village, it had picked up enough momentum to become a raging torrent, sweeping into buildings, washing cars away and felling huge trees.
